3 Signs That Could Indicate A Termite Problem

Termites are winged pests that look similar to a large ant. They are brown or black in color and only some have wings. These pests are commonly mistaken as flying ants, although flying ants are a nuisance, they will not eat through your house. If you have termites, there will be signs indicating their presence. Read on for a few of these signs to keep an eye out for that could indicate a termite problem.

1. Termites Themselves

If you are seeing termites flying around you when you're outside of your house, keep an eye on where they are going and what they are doing. Termites will go to a wooden structure, or they are going to their tunnels with whatever food they have collected for their colony to consume. Other flying insects such as flying ants are not eating the wood on your home, they're simply going to be flying about, you may also see other flying insects such as flies, bees, wasps, hornets, and beetles, but they look distinctively different from a termite.

2. Sawdust Around Your Home

If you see sawdust around your home and you haven't been doing any type of renovations, it may be due to termites. Termites will chew through wood and consume the wood, but they leave sawdust in their wake. If you see holes in the wood around your home and sawdust around the area, it may be because termites have started chewing their way through this part of your house. If the wood is rotting or hollow, it can also indicate termites. Termites prefer soft, rotting wood, so if you have any areas around your home that are damaged in some way and are kept moist, termites will be attracted to these areas. These are areas that should be repaired immediately to keep termites away.

3. Tunnels

Termites make tunnels in order to get from their food source to their colony. These tunnels are made from dirt and other debris to help hide them from other predators. The tunnels can also look similar to a mud wasp nest, although the tunnels of a termite are usually much longer and narrower in size.

If you suspect that you have a termite problem, and have spotted any of the signs listed above, call a pest control company for help to get rid of these unwanted pests. They can be quite a nuisance and cause a lot of damage to the structure of your home or to other exterior structures. Call in a professional termite treatment company and save your home.
